One of the greatest experts on “psychic attacks” was the advanced British occultist Dion Fortune. Born Violet Mary Firth (1890-1946) in Bryn-y-Bia, Llandudno, Wales, Fortune reported visions of Atlantis at age four and is said to have developed mediumistic abilities in her twentieth year. After attending courses in psychology and psychotherapy at the University of London, she practiced for some time as a lay psychotherapist. Drawn to the occult, she joined the Theosophical Society and was later initiated into the London Temple of The Alpha et Omega (formerly named The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn). Fortune eventually founded her own magical order, The Society of the Inner Light. Her works include a number of novels and short stories, but she is best remembered for her non-fiction books on magical subjects, such as The Cosmic Doctrine, The Mystical Qabalah, and the aforementioned Psychic Self-Defence, all of them classics in their field.
Like many great occultists, Fortune is supposed to have had access to the “Akashic Records,” that great storehouse of knowledge encoded in the aether. She supposedly drew from this knowledge, channeling it into her literary work. Thus many of her books almost “wrote themselves.” An occultist of the highest order who like Rudolf Steiner was firmly of the right-hand path, not the left, Fortune is credited with contributing to the revival of the Mystery Tradition of the West and is recognized as one of the most significant figures of 20th century esoteric thought.
Fortune was well aware that occult powers can be used to achieve harmful ends, as well as good. Knowledge in the wrong hands, occult or otherwise, can be a very dangerous thing. For an occult attack to be possible, for there to be an “entrance to the soul,” the aura of the victim has to be pierced, says Fortune, and this always occurs from within, “by the response of fear or desire going out towards the attacking entity.” One is immediately reminded of the Enfield poltergeist case and the damaged and leaking auras of Janet and her mother.
In the event of a psychic attack, it’s important, says Fortune, to keep your cool and not let your emotions get the better of yourself in order to ensure that your aura remains strong, healthy, and impenetrable. It’s a well-known fact that those who suffer from anxiety and depression often feel tired and lethargic, while those who remain optimistic and happy have an abundance of energy. Colin Wilson once said, “We go around leaking energy in the same way that someone who has slashed their wrists would go around leaking blood.”
According to Fortune, it’s possible for a trained occultist to project their etheric body, or etheric double, at will, and to use it as a “weapon” of “psychic attack.” These attacks are usually carried out at night, she says, while the victim is asleep and therefore psychically vulnerable. “If there is a definite psychic attack of sufficient force to make itself noticeable at all,” she writes, “there soon begin to appear characteristic dreams.
